The Nature of Zooey Deschanel - Articles

Tomorrow's Tastemakers Today

In last year's rock saga Almost Famous, a soulful Zooey Deschanel told Patrick Fugit that if he listened to the Who, he'd see his future. These days it's Zooey's future that looks bright. This month she dons "lots of orange suede" in the comedy The New Guy; later she'll trade barbs with an A-list ensemble cast in Big Trouble and examine teen angst in the mental-ward drama Manic. It's quite a hat trick, even for the daughter of a movie veteran (her father, cinematographer Caleb Deschanel, was Oscar-nominated for The Patriot). "My dad filmed us growing up, so I'm used to being in front of the camera. It's comfortable. My whole life has been documented, even the awkward stages."
Style Evolution "In high school I wore cocktail dresses to class. Now I'm more laid-back, but even if it's jeans and sneakers, I'll look for just the right ones. I also love Mui Mui and Marc Jacobs."
Alter Ego "If I weren't into acting, I think I'd like to be a designer. I'm always altering or redesigning clothes."
Vintage Mix "I wear a lot of old coats, and some Courreges and Pucci. I also have a great Chanel suit that my parents bought for me in Paris."
Fashion Fantasy "A suit from Christian Dior's forties New Look collection, or anything from the movie Funny Face. I love that old Givenchy."
