The Nature of Zooey Deschanel - Articles

Elle Girl
Zooey & Emily

Who better to show off these girlie spring dresses than acting sisters Zooey and Emily Deschanel?

Performing has always been a big part of life for the Deschanels. "We wrote and directed plays all the time when we were little," says Emily, 26. "Mainly Westerns. We even wrote music." Adds Zooey, 25, "We had those horses that were just heads on sticks, and used bananas as guns."
The sisters went to L.A.'s Crossroads School for Arts and Sciences, where drama club rules (just ask fellow alums Gary Coleman, Jack Black and SNL's Maya Rudolph). After participating in tons of musicals and plays, Zooey realized that acting was for her, but Emily decided to study acting in Boston before making the Hollywood leap.
This year, both ladies will be featured in a few projects. Zooey's been busy ever since her Almost Famous days as Patrick Fugit's flight-attendant sister. Winter Passing, with her Elf co-star Will Ferrell, is due later this year, and sci-fi-comedy cult fave The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy, co-starring John Malkovich and Sam Rockwell, comes out this summer. "It was really fun to get to the set and see these unbelievable spaceships," says Zooey.
Emily was the paint-throwing fur sctivist in 1994's It Could Happen to You and a nurse who cared for Jude Law in Cold Mountain. Late last year she starred in the indie film Easy. "It's like a more realistic Bridget Jones's Diary," she says. Now get ready to be spooked watching Emily in Boogeyman with Barry Watson. And later this year, catch her in Glory Road with Tatyana Ali and Derek Luke. "It's the story of the first all-black college basketball teams to win the NCAA national championship," she says. "My dad's favorite joke is to tell people that it was a real stretch for me to be a basketball player, which I'm not - I play the coach's wife!"
