ITALIAN JOB, THE

Released: May 30, 2003

Hollywood's latest love affair with the heist/con themed movie continues! Recent additions in the genre include "Confidence", "The Good Thief" and "Ocean's Eleven". The latest is "The Italian Job", a remake of the 1969 Michael Caine film of the same name. A gang of robbers, lead by career criminal Charlie Croker (Mark Wahlberg), create the largest traffic jam in Los Angeles history, giving them time to pull off a theft of gold bullion. They get away in their Mini Coopers, which are small enough to drive on sidewalks so they can make a clean get away before the traffic jam clears. An all-star cast made up of Charlize Theron, Donald Sutherland, Jason Statham, Seth Green, Mos Def and the always interesting Edward Norton give fun performances and the heist action is pretty much non-stop throughout the running time. Directed by F. Gary Gray, whose resume includes faves like "The Negotiator", "Set It Off" and "Friday". A fun rollercoaster ride but not without a smart backbone to hold it all together...
