SPANGLISH

Released: December 17, 2004

Yes, Adam Sandler is in "Spanglish" and it could be seen as the second of his attempts to get into more dramatic roles (after 2002's "Punch-Drunk Love"). But, even though it's Sandler in a serious movie, it's not actually even a film centered around Sandler's character. In fact, the movie is about a woman (Paz Vega) and her daughter emigrate from Mexico for a better life in America, where they start working for a family where the father (Sandler) is a newly celebrated chef with an insecure wife (Téa Leoni). It's a very thoughtful story told from the perspective of the Mexican woman's young daughter, played by Shelbie Bruce. The cast is good, as are supporting players like Cloris Leachman, Sarah Steele and Sarah Steele. Directed by sometime director (1997's "As Good As it Gets") and uber-producer James L. Brooks ("The Simpsons", "Jerry Maguire").
