SKY CAPTAIN AND THE WORLD OF TOMORROW

Recalling the serials of the 1940s (just like "Star Wars" and the "Indiana Jones" series), "Sky Captain" is an epic in that tradition. Actors like Jude Law, Gwyneth Paltrow, Angelina Jolie and Giovanni Ribisi played their scenes in front of a blue screen only to have all the backgrounds added in later via computer animations. While is succeeds much better in that respect to the recent "Star Wars" chapters (the actors actually generate non-stilted performances), it still lacks the freshness of the original "Star Wars" movies and the "Indiana Jones" series. The image is somewhat soft-focused as well, but that, along with the sepia toned coloring, is probably intended by director Kerry Conran. Not bad but ultimately will not be remembered like the Spielberg and Lucas efforts that inspired it...
