SPIDER

Released: December 13, 2002

After several genuinely stupid efforts ("Crash" and "eXistenZ"), director David Cronenberg has returned with quite possibly his least commercially appealing movie in years, but also his best in as many years. "Spider" tells the story of a mentally-disturbed man (Ralph Fiennes) takes residence in a halfway house. His mind gradually slips back into the realm created by his illness, where he replays a key part of his childhood. While slowly unfolded, "Spider" is compelling due to the high level of committment from Fiennes along with the multiple parts played by Miranda Richardson. Also shining here are Gabriel Byrne and Lynn Redgrave. Once Cronenberg finds a truly unique project, he dives in 1000%. This time he found a quality project for a change.
