STEPFORD WIVES, THE (2004)

Released: June 11, 2004

Frank Oz directs Nicole Kidman and Matthew Broderick in this updating of the 1975 original. While the older version was played for serious sci-fi, this new version is reborn as a comedy. While it tries for laughs, they come few and far between. It somehow cannot stray from the darker sci-fi world of the original. As a result, the film is disjointed, unevenly paced and over before you know it, at barely 90 minutes long. Rumor has it that Kidman never wanted to work with Broderick as well, which possibly contributed the lack of chemistry in their on screen relationship. Kidman, however, looks amazing as per usual. I expected more from Frank "Yoda" Oz. His "Bowfinger" comedy with Steve Martin was MUCH better than this forgettable revision of a sci-fi cult classic.
