MISS CONGENIALITY

Released: December 22, 2000

Sandra Bullock stars as Gracie Hart, a tomboy federal agent who is enlisted to help track down a serial bomber who has targeted the Miss United States Beauty Pageant as his next show of force. While far from a classic, "Miss Congeniality" tries to throw us a few funny lines and situations, some of which work and some just do not. Michael Cane co-stars as Bullock's "beauty trainer" when she is called upon to go undercover as Miss New Jersey. Also along for the ride are Candice Bergen, Ernie Hudson and William Shatner in what can be described as entertaining yet instantly forgettable. Director Donald Petrie, best known for the first "Grumpy Old Men" movie, patches together scenes in a typical workman-like style without any bells or whistles. Bullock actually produced this feature, which suggests this is a personal labour of love for her. No worse than Bullock's "Two If By Sea", if you can recall that one... Memorable dialogue: One contestant calls Miss Hawaii a "Don Ho". I chuckled audiably.
