8 MILE

Released: November 8, 2002

Hey, Eminem CAN act! And at least he chose his big movie debut to be a more realistic story than Mariah Carey's ill fated "Glitter" semi bio-pic. Kim Basinger returns to director Curtis Hanson after appearing in his 1997 pic "L.A. Confidential", for which she won an Oscar for Best Actress in a Supporting role. Kim's acting talent aside, it does seem odd to see Eminem acting alongside her and both directed by Hanson. The acting IS solid yet the story of young Detroit rapper Rabbit (Eminem) trying to catch a break on tough 8 Mile Road feels unfinished as he never really gets that break. He wins a rap contest in a local club but otherwise we get to see ol' Em acting reasonably well with Basinger, Mekhi Phifer and Brittany Murphy. Fans of Eminem will enjoy this but Curtis Hanson fans may wanna wait to rent this on a rainy day.
