An update of horror director John Carptenter's 1976 original, this polished new version from French director Jean-François Richet is both better looking and retains the violent aspects that Carpenter bravely displayed. This could have been a paint-by-numbers remake but Richet changes a few plot points to make it actually quite entertaining. A good cast was assembled too - including Ethan Hawke, Maria Bello, Gabriel Byrne, Kim Coates, Matt Craven, Drea de Matteo, Brian Dennehy, Laurence Fishburne and John Leguizamo.
