BOURNE SUPREMACY, THE

Released: July 23, 2004

Matt Damon and Franka Potente return in the second movie of the "Bourne" series. Picking up a couple years later with Bourne and Potente living in relative peace in India, the movie wastes no time cutting to the chase, literally. Surprising plot development at the start yields the way to non-stop chase for the duration of the movie, with introspective doses of character embellishment. The only gripes I have, which were shared by a few other people in the audience as I left the theatre, is that the fight scenes are shot in a close-up, hand-held, shakey manner - something which may be a director's cheat for not shooting all the details convincingly in easy to view style. The car chase sequences, which use the former method as well, but to a lesser degree are far more impressive. The car chases result in huge crashes and, I'm just guessing, mucho fatalities as well, but the movie doesn't stop to check on innocent bystanders. It's all about if Bourne can survive his predators. The director of the first "Bourne" film, Doug Liman ("Swingers", "Go!"), is back only as an executive producer and new British director Paul Greengrass handles the film with just the degree of action and character development required. I'm looking forward to the third in the series - "The Bourne Ultimatum", coming soon...
