SECRETARY

Released: September 20, 2003

Lee Holloway (Maggie Gyllenhaal, actor Jake's sister) has a few strikes against her when she applies for a secretarial position at the law office of E. Edward Grey (James Spader). Although she’s never had a job in her life, Lee is hired by the mysterious lawyer, Mr. Grey. At first the work seems quite normal – but soon, in between typing, filing and making coffee, Lee and Mr. Grey embark on a more personal relationship, crossing lines of conduct that goes from normal office routines to beyond David Lynch strangeness. It is different enough that it kept me interested and entertained for its duration. Fans of Lynch-styled film making will appreciate "Secretary". Gyllenhaal is perfect as the secretary, a joy to watch as her character blossoms under James Spader's lawyer character. Excellent support from Jeremy Davies, Lesley Ann Warren and Amy Locane, who has been off in B-movie land since her initial burst of fame in "Lost Angels" (1989) and John Waters' "Cry-Baby" (1990).
