DRAGONFLY

Released: February 22, 2002

This movie mines similar territory that "The Sixth Sense" did and tries to yield a similar pay off. Does it succeed? Pretty much nothing will surpass "The Sixth Sense", not even M. Night Shyamalan could with his "Unbreakable" followup. What "Dragonfly" DOES achieve is allowing Kevin Costner to bring a pretty good performance to the screen with a lot of great support acting support. Comedy director Tom Shadyac - who scored at the box office with "Ace Ventura: Pet Detective" (1994), "The Nutty Professor" (1996), and "Liar Liar" (1997) - started to worry me with his overly manipulative crapper "Patch Adams" (1998). He redeems himself here mostly with a light and enjoyable yarn about a grieving doctor who is being contacted by his late wife through his patients near death experiences. Costner, as I mentioned, does a good job. Also featured, in varying degrees of bit parts are Joe Morton, Linda Hunt, Kathy Bates, Jay Thomas and Matt Craven. Worth a rental if you're feeling in a spiritual mood I suppose.
