DOGVILLE

Released: March 26, 2004

A woman (Nicole Kidman) on the run from the mob is reluctantly accepted in a small Colorado town called Dogville. In exchange she agrees to work for them. As a search visits town, she finds her their support has a price. Lars Von Trier directs this almost 3 hour film in a creative fashion - the entire film takes place on a single stage where the city's streets and the resident's homes are drawn in chalk. Characters enter and exit through imaginary doors, everyone is on stage all the time, whether they are involved in a scene or not. It's a little trying to sit through the slow-paced story but the violent ending had me questioning what the hell Von Trier was going after - that all Americans are selfish bastards, or what. I applaud the creativity but the story itself is a bit of a yawner.
