AUTO FOCUS

Released: October 18, 2002

Greg Kinnear absolutely shines in the lead role as Bob Crane, the doomed actor from TV's "Hogan's Heroes". From director Paul Schrader comes this fine bio pic that shows the early promise of Crane's acting career to his meeting with with video technician John Carpenter and then his untimely demise in a Scottsdale, Arizona apartment in 1978. Despite overt evidence pointing towards Carpenter, this was before DNA and the murder has remained unsolved to this day. Kinnear is amazing in this role, as are Willem Dafoe as Carpenter with Rita Wilson and Ed Begley Jr. "Auto Focus" is among Schrader's best films and the look of the movie is amazingly true to the era its bringing to life. While not for everyone, this is a fascinating tale. The extras on the DVD are worth checking out too, especially the real life look at the Bob Crane murder case which itself is a circus of lost evidence and poor investigation. Definitely check out "Auto Focus".
