VIRGIN SUICIDES, THE

Released: May 12, 2000

A rather subdued movie about neighborhood boys discovering their sexuality and delving into the mysteries of womanhood through their friendships with five sisters. The movie explores a family made up of father James Woods and his wife Kathleen Turner and how they parent the five girls and underneath the happy exterior there is trouble brewing - but the warning sings are not seen by the parents until it's too late. Kirsten Dunst plays one of the five daughters and we are given an insight into the dark brooding underbelly that exists within girls. As one early scene puts it so well, the first girl to attempt suicide is asked by her doctor, "You're too young to know how bad life really gets", and she replies, "Well, you've obviously never been a thirteen year old girl". The doctor has no answer ready for that one. Narrated by Giovanni Ribisi and featuring quick cameos by Danny DeVito, Michael Pare and Scott Glenn. Worth seeing if only for the fact such dark subject matter was tackled at all. Directed by Sofia Coppola, daughter of Francis Ford...
