JOSIE AND THE PUSSYCATS

Released: April 11, 2001

Enjoyable for what it is, "Josie And The Pussycats" makes no great claims to be a great movie. It does, however, mirror the original cartoon quite accurately. Where the comic and cartoon were based on the slightest of concepts and storylines, the live action movie version starring Rachel Leigh Cook, Tara Reid, and Rosario Dawson is entertaining and light. The scene at the start involving a manufactured boy band that had outlived its usefullness was dead on, as are a few subtle jokes. Where "Josie" fails is the never ending product placements (which ARE part of the storyline but you'd think all the ad revenue could have bought a better script) and the fact that despite being a satire on the music business, it never really pulls any punches at the industry that weren'y already utterly apparent. Great support from Parker Posey, Alan Cumming and featuring the voice of Josie from Kay Hanley, previously of the late lamented band Letters To Cleo.
