HELLBOY

Released: April 2, 2004

First rising to fame in the late 80s with TV's "Beauty and the Beast" along with Linda Hamilton, Ron Perlman is literally plucked from obscurity - again - to play the comic book based hereo named Hellboy. Hellboy (aka the Son of Satan), is raised from infancy after being conjured by and rescued from the Nazis, grows up to fight on the good guy's team. There's a lot of CGI effects and I initially went into "Hellboy" not expecting much. But, boy was I pleasantly surprised! Not only was the film good, it had heart and it had humor. The CGI exists to forward the story, not simply acting as a spectacle. Perlman is perfect for this updating of his "beast" character, who simply wants to be with his true love played by Selma Blair. Also starring John Hurt and Jeffrey Tambor. Finally, a comic book to film adaptation that actually works! If only "Spider-Man" or "The Hulk" were as good.
