MYSTIC RIVER Released: October 10, 2003 Clint Eastwood returns with his followup to last year's "Blood Work". Directing but not starring this time around, Eastwood tackles a story that is very dark and not exactly the formula fare that the neighborhood multiplex demands. Which is a good thing! Childhood friends Jimmy Marcus (Seann Penn), Sean Devine (Kevin Bacon) and Dave Boyle (Tim Robbins) reunite following the death of Jimmy's oldest daughter, Katie (Emmy Rossum). Sean's a police detective on the case, gathering difficult and disturbing evidence; he's also tasked with handling Jimmy's rage and need for retribution. The story is a tangled and complex web that ends frustratingly but also believably. The great cast, supported by Laurence Fishburne, Marcia Gay Harden and Laura Linney make this a joy to watch for the performances alone. There is brutally graphic violence here but it's all in context and definitely not for glamour. If you're ready for a serious non-CGI non-FX based film about people, this is for you. 137 Minutes Warner Bros. |
