BLUE CRUSH

Released: August 16, 2002

I recall first seeing director John Stockwell as one of the leads in "Christine", the Stephen King penned John Carpenter film from 1983. Well, his acting career floundered and he took up writing and directing since then. Some of his writing credits include "Breast Men" starring David Schwimmer and "Rock Star" starring Jennifer Aniston. He directed the decent "Cheaters" (2000) starring Jena Malone and the not exactly decent "crazy/beautiful" (2001) with Kirsten Dunst. As far as "Blue Crush" goes, he tackles a basic surf movie. A romance is thrown in for added viability. What we get is perhaps one of the best surf movies I've ever seen - and I actually REALLY liked Kathryn Bigelow's "Point Break" (1992). The surfing footage is so amazing and breathtaking, it feels like you are on the waves with the surfers. The Dolby THX sound only increased the realistic at-the-beach feeling of crashing surf hitting the shore. The model-perfect Kate Bosworth stars along with Michelle Rodriguez ("Girlfight" 2000), Sanoe Lake and Mika Boorem and deliver some genuine scenes (imagine Bosworth as a hotel maid instructing a guest how to best dispose of a used condom). These girls also provide ample T&A as well, which goes without saying. However, it's not all skin here at "Blue Crush". Go see it just for the surf scenes alone. Stockwell even mounts cameras on the tips of surf boards for in-the-action dynamics. The actors look like they did much of their own surfing too - Bosworth can really move! A perfect Summer movie and makes me yearn to return to Hawaii once again...
