SUGAR AND SPICE

Released: January 26, 2001

"A popular high school cheerleader becomes pregnant with the star quarterback's child, only to find herself turning to crime to support the lifestyle she wants to live" - or so goes the IMDb one-sentence description. After seeing this movie and thinking about it I really cannot say it was very memorable. This, despite a decent cast of Mena Suvari, Marla Sokoloff and a mousy looking Sean Young (playing Suvari's jail-bound Mother). Like 2000's "Bring It On", this is a light and bouncy cheerleader movie but try as it may to be cutting and daring, it falls flat on a number of occasions. There is barely any cheerleading in this cheerleading movie that centers primarily around planning a goofy bank heist. And not just any bank, but a bank branch situated in a grocery supermarket. Parts were funny but the fact this movie had it's influences blatantly on display and then felt the need to spell it out for the audience (in the case of the Madonna and "Point Break" Keanu Reeves scenes) just felt too forced. Maybe this will translate better as a rental...
