MY BIG FAT GREEK WEDDING

Released: April 19, 2002

A young Greek woman falls in love with a non-Greek and struggles to get her family to accept him while she comes to terms with her heritage and cultural identity. Starring Nia Vardalos and based on her play, it took fellow Greek Rita Wilson (aka Mrs. Tom Hanks) to get this into production. But while every major studio passed, Young gun IFC Films stepped in and glady produced it. Millions of dollars grossed later, this small indie film proves you don't need A-list actors or explosions to make a very good movie. Set in Chicago but mostly shot in Toronto, this film was fun to watch from start to finish. Because it spends time developing postive characters and situations, you actually leave the theatre in a good mood - a rarity these days! Don't discount this as a mere chick flick romance. It's an all-round good pic, built with love and it shows. Everything from Vardalos' movie dad played by Michael Constantine (who solves all problems with a little Windex) to appearances by long under rated actors like SCTV's Andrea Martin and Lainie Kazan help make this a real enjoyable film watching experience. Even *NSync's Joey Fatone excells - and this coming from a guy who never thought he'd be saying nice things about *NSync.
