BRIDGET JONES'S DIARY

Released: April 13, 2001

A British woman is determined to improve herself while she looks for love in a year in which she keeps a personal diary. Considering she is played by the very American Renée Zellweger, it proves without a doubt that this actress has the right stuff and will likely be around Hollywood for quite some time to come. Hugh Grant plays a sleazy boss who finds Renée's Bridget appealing but can't quite ditch his womanizing ways even after beginning to date her. Colin Firth plays Grant's rival, competing for Bridget's attention. Firth played Lord Wessex in John Madden's "Shakespeare in Love" opposite Gwyneth Paltrow and as Geoffrey Clifton in Anthony Minghella's "The English Patient" with Ralph Fiennes and Kristen Scott Thomas - films which have both won Academy Awards for Best Picture. With his "good guy" role in this picture, it's possible we'll see his star rising fast in Hollywood. A sequel is already planned, based on the previously written novels about the Bridget character by Helen Fielding.
