28 DAYS

Sandra Bullock stars in her own version of Meg Ryan's "When A Man Loves A Woman", another abusive drunk flick. While the Ryan movie was more reality based and depressing the Bullock version is the more upbeat and happy take on the same situation. This was directed by Betty Thomas whom has made a seamless transition from cast member of the 80s TV cop show "Hill Street Blues" to directing such Hollywood fare as "Private Parts", "Dr. Doolittle" and "The Brady Bunch Movie". Thomas opts for the sentimental but not too depressing option here and the end result is a watchable, peppy film about Gwen Cummings (Bullock) whose life is ripped apart by her drinking until she messes up so bad it's eaither a jail term or a 28 day long rehab sentence. She goes, reluctantly, for the rehab and the wacky hilarity of what life in rehab ensues.
