TOUCHING THE VOID

Released: December 12, 2003

In the mid-80s two young climbers (Joe Simpson and Simon Yates) attempted to reach the summit of Siula Grande in Peru; a feat that had previously been attempted but never achieved. This is a combo documentary/dramatic recreation of the events that followed. The climbing pair ascend the mountain with no real effort or troubles. Getting back down is where everything went wrong. Combined with interviews with the real life climbers and recreations played by actors along with splendid cinematography and scenery, "Touching The Void" is a compelling look at this scary climbing expedition. Do not let this one pass by simply because it's a documentary - Tom Cruise attempted to develop this story into a film of his own but gave up. This "real" retelling of the story does more than just fine. This will either make you not want to climb mountains or, perhaps, spurn you to try it. I opt for the watching the brilliant documentary option myself...
