MEN IN BLACK II Released: July 3, 2002 Barry Sonnenfeld returns after the Spring 2002 dead-on-arrival Tim Allen vehicle "Big Trouble" with a sequel to the massively popular first movie in the "MIB" series. Unlike the 1997 original "Men In Black", the sequel lacks the excitement and thrills I was hoping for. Also, this second installment is SHORT!! Subtract the Sony-bundled animated short "The Chubbchubbs" and the features opening/closing credits and you're left with barely over 75 minutes of story. Tommy Lee Jones and Will Smith take the money and sleepwalk through this exercise in Hollywood sequel-by-the-numbers movie making. Sonnenfeld's last decent movie apart from the first "MIB" was 1995's "Get Shorty". He left cinematography after 1990's "Misery" and debuted in the director's char a year later with the decent "The Addams Family"... Such potential... Unhappy results - both in this "MIBII" sequel and his other recent movies as well. 88 Minutes Columbia/Sony |
