BLOW

Released: April 6, 2001

Directed by longtime Denis Leary supporter Ted Demme, "Blow" brings us a hearty combination of the sensibilities that made "Casino" and "Boogie Nights" work so well. Given that we have already seen this kind of movie style before it isn't as awe inspiring as it could be. But it still is pretty good. Contrary to some reviewers, this movies does not blow. Demme (Jonathan "Silence Of The Lambs" Demme's nephew) brings together a great cast with Leary along as a producer this time around. Fronting this druglord epic is Johnny Depp, playing George Jung, the man who established the American cocaine market in the 1970's. Such good support too, from Penélope Cruz, Franka Potente (the redhead from "Run Lola Run"), Ray Liotta and Paul "Pee Wee Herman" Reubens. This is a gritty movie, in stark contrast to Demme's previous hit "The Ref" (a light comedy which stars Leary, Kevin Spacey and Judy Davis).
