OPEN WATER

Released: August 6, 2004

Chris Kentis directs his second film, the low budget "Open Water", using digital cameras instead of film. Once you get over the fact the image quality isn't your typical movie's clean film look, you begin to appreciate its documentary-like effectiveness. "Open Waters" is based on the true story of two scuba divers accidentally stranded in shark infested waters after their tour boat has mistakenly left them behind. The movie stars Blanchard Ryan and Daniel Travis, both in unflattering roles but delivering very human and real performances. The couple remains optimistic that they will be saved even as various marine animals begin treating their bodies as apetizers. "Open Water" makes no apologies for its dark storyline and essentially allows us to watch as a horrible situation turns very bad as sharks become curious. The movie isn't about sharks attacking people, it's about people stranded in open waters, and with this mandate the movie succeeds particularly well.
