LOVE LIZA

Released: December 30, 2002

Following the unexplained suicide of his wife Liza, website designer Wilson Joel (Philip Seymour Hoffman) decides to take up remote control airplanes as a hobby (and the gas huffing perk he gets out of it) while trying to deal with his mother-in-law (Kathy Bates). Liza leaves behind a suicide note but Wilson is far to messed up to actually read it. This is definitely NOT THE MOVIE YOU SHOULD SEE IF YOU'RE ALREADY DEPRESSED. The grief Wilson goes through may be seen as unbearably over the top but hey, we all deal with loss differently. Wilson makes friends with the gas huffing neighborhood kids, bonds with a remote control boat hobbyist and blows a plum job opportunity. How would you deal with a loss? Maybe not huffing gas but Wilson's Hoffman does a good job at bringing this guy to the screen. Written by Hoffman's brother Gordy and directed by the nerdy record store geek from "High Fidelity" Todd Louiso. Worth watching for Hoffman's ultra downbeat grieving husband...
