WHALE RIDER

Released: June 6, 2003

Whale Rider is a contemporary fable about Maori legend and a coming-of-age story about a brave adolescent girl, Pai (Keisha Castle-Hughes). This is a very specific story but is utterly universal in its scope. It's not surprising that this emotionally powerful movie, a prefect choice for younger viewers - especially girls, is not the product of Hollywood. Rather this is from New Zealand director Niki Caro. Castle-Hughes is onscreen in almost every scene and literally carries the film singlehandedly but she is among a very fine cast that really makes "Whale Rider" a joy to watch. A haunting score from Lisa Gerrard ("Gladiator") gels with the visuals to form a very memorable movie experience for audiences of all ages.
