ANIMAL, THE

Released: June 1, 2001

"The Animal" with Rob Schneider is not as entertaining as his first breakthrough role in "Duece Bigelow" but it does have its own goofy charm. After receiving organ transplants from various animal donors, Schneider finds himself taking on the traits of those animals. Sounds stupid, right? But yet it's all very funny and enjoyable. It easily matches or goes past many of the other SNL related movies of the recent past. Produced by Adam Sandler, who also makes a cameo, the film also stars John C. McGinley with Cloris Leachman, Norm MacDonald and the inexplicable casting of Edward Asner (boss of Mary in TV's 1970 sitcom "Mary Tyler Moore"). The movie also marks the first movie role to had from a "Survivor" cast member in the form of bug-bitten Colleen Haskell. Can she act? For the kind of role given to her she did OK. The proof will come when she's assigned a serious drama. Overall, I enjoyed David Spade in "Joe Dirt" better. But "The Animal" has enough laughs to keep you going, even if the movie is paper thin...
