GOOD THIEF, THE

Released: April 2, 2003

Neil Jordan's latest flick is a good one and also serves as a perfect vehicle for Nick Nolte. As an actor who has seen a couple real life "incidents" get media attention, Nolte was perfect for the role of Bob Montagnet, an aging gambler who has nothing left to lose. His new score idea is to rob a bunch of rare paintings from a hugely protected Monte Carlo vault. How he and his cohorts go about this and fool the police (and us in the audience) is a very entertaing ride. Anne, a young Eastern Euro girl Montagnet rescued from prostitution is played by newcomer Nutsa Kukhianidze. She is at first wary of Nolte's intentions but quickly warms to his personality. The rest of the cast is exceptional as are the characters they bring to life. It's one in a long line of heist movies we've been offered recently. Like "Heist" and "Oceans 11", there are twists here. And they are good twists too, refreshingly told here by director Jordan. Nolte shines in this film and despite his real life scandals, this is an actor doing what he does at his very best.
