ANGELA'S ASHES

Released: January 21, 2000

This movie is so realistic in its dirtiness that it should be seen on the merits of the art direction and cinematography alone. Based on the best selling autobiography by Irish expat Frank McCourt, Angela's Ashes follows the experiences of young Frankie and his family as they try against all odds to escape the poverty endemic in the slums of pre-war Limerick. The brilliant cast features Emily Watson and Robert Carlyle among others who absolutely shine through in this otherwise grim film. Director Alan Parker really knows how to capture atmosphere in his films and this is no exception. Not to be watched if you're already depressed, this movie is one you ultimately shouldn't let pass you by. Do not let the fact it isn't a happy and manfactured Hollywood sugary matinee flick disuade you from this one.
