FREAKY FRIDAY

Released: August 6, 2003

As someone who is old enough to have seen the original 1976 version in the theatres, boy do I feel old! I checked out this new model version from director Mark S. Waters and starring Jamie Lee Curtis and Lindsay Lohan and was pleasantly surprised. Not only is Curtis perfect as the mother who switches bodies with her daughter, so is the daughter, played by Lohan (who appeared in another Disney remake, 1998's "The Parent Trap"). The pairing works well, especially when it's set within a story that, while pretty standard, is pretty entertaining. And with its heart in the right place. Lohan's character is in a rock band and apparently she actually can play guitar in her own real life band too. This is light summer cinema that is perfect viewing for the whole family. I enjoyed the interactions between Curtis and Lohan - both show they are up for the job at hand. A tired looking Mark Harmon co-stars along with Stephen Tobolowsky and a cast of solid supporters. There's nothing groundbreaking here but then that's not why you should go see "Freaky Friday". See it for the light 'n fun movie it is, that'll leave you smiling at the end...
