AMERICAN PSYCHO

Released: April 14, 2000

This was supposedly very controversial. The book by Brett Easton Ellis was apparently very disturbing and when it came time to make the movie it seemed like the book was unfilmable due to how graphic and brutal it was. So chilling was the tone of the book and subsequent screenplay that after Christian Bale was ditched in favor of Leonardo DiCaprio, that pussy-boy Leo decided to jump ship. Bale was asked back and Canadian director Mary Harron co-wrote a screenplay that was felt to be a suitable adaption of such a troubled story. Well, now it's released and hey - not only is it not very controversial or graphic, it's barely enough to hold my interest. Sure, there were a few funny scenes involving Bale's Patrick Bateman character and his relentless career based ambitions and musical tastes but other than that it was really just not there as a movie. In trying to be less graphic it seems as if the movie had any other substance sucked out of it as well. Not something I'll be out to watch a second time.
