VERY LONG ENGAGEMENT, A

Released: December 17, 2004

French director Jean-Pierre Jeunet, who gave us "The City Of Lost Children", "Delicatessen" and the fourth in the Aliens series "Alien: Resurrection" - plus most recently and most known to film fans, 2001's "Amélie". Clearly Jeunet is a talented director and his "A Very Long Engagement", starring Audrey Tautou from "Amélie", is his best yet. The movie tells the story of a a young woman, Mathilde's (Tautou) relentless search for her fiancée, who has disappeared from the trenches of the Somme during World War One. Beautifully shot and possibly the most brutally violent war movie since "Saving Private Ryan", this is a thoughtful story of personal detective work and a passion between two people whose lives are put on hold during chaos. Watch out for Jodie Foster, who has a small part. A Paris court ruled the movie too American to compete in French film festivals because of its American Warner Bros. backing. Regardless, it's a fine French movie and a fine movie overall, where ever it's from...
