INTOLERABLE CRUELTY

Released: October 10, 2003

It's a big budget Universal project from Brian Grazer's Imagine Entertainment and was promoted heavily prior to release. But a huge pile of money can't hide the fact this is a Coen brothers movie through and through, right to the brothers adapting the screenplay on their own. A revenge-seeking gold digger (Catherine Zeta-Jones) marries a womanizing Beverly Hills lawyer (George Clooney, his seconf flick with the Coens) with the intention of making a killing in the divorce. Also starring Geoffrey Rush, Cedric the Entertainer, Edward Herrmann and Billy Bob Thornton, "Intolerable Cruelty" isn't as great as I desired but even a simply OK Coen brothers film is better than 99% of the crap out there that lines the bird cages we call our multiplexes these days...
